Machine quilting is rapidly increasing in popularity as quilters become aware of the quality of work of some machine quilters. There are also the added benefits of time saving and increased durability.
There are two basic styles of machine quilting. These are:
Edge-to-edge or Pantograph
Heirloom or FreemotionPANTOGRAPH
When a pattern is used as a guide for quilting, it is known as Pantograph. There are many patterns available and new ones are always being created. These can be re-used countless times and this type of quilting is usually the fastest, especially when a single pattern is repeated throughout a quilt. Quilters who would like to achieve a beautiful finish to their work, but want to limit the cost would be very happy with pantograph.
HEIRLOOM
Heirllom or Freemotion is not based upon an existing pattern. The quilter creates a unique design for each quilt and operates the machine without using a pattern. Freemotion is more time-consuming and requires more artistry and experience from the machine quilter. When done well however, Heirloom work results in beautiful pieces with greatly increased value.
EDGE-TO-EDGE
When repeating a pattern or design from one edge of the quilt to the other, this is known as Edge-to-Edge. This can be done in either Pantograph or Freemotion style of quilting.
Accomplished machine quilters will be able to help their clients determine what is most suitable for a particular quilt, taking into consideration how the quilt will be used, quilt top design, budget, etc. In many cases a combination of all three styles of machine quilting is the most appropriate.
