POWASSAN AND DISTRICT UNION PUBLIC LIBRARY INTERNET AGREEMENT

Passed by Powassan & District Union Public Library Board on June 24, 2002

Patrons using the Internet computers must sign a copy of this policy to acknowledge that it has been read and understood. Users must check in with the librarian before each session. Non library members must leave valid identification such as a library card or drivers license with the librarian until they check out.

Your signature on this agreement is legally binding and indicates that you have read and understood the terms and agree to abide by them.

The Internet is a worldwide, unregulated source of information and users must assess the accuracy of information for themselves. The Library Board and staff have no control over information on the Internet and cannot be responsible for its content. The Powassan and District Union Public Library does not protect users from information they may find offensive.

The operation of this service requires the proper conduct of all users who must adhere to our strict guidelines. These guidelines are laid out here so you understand your responsibilities. In general you are required to be legal, ethical and efficient in your use of this service. Violation of the rules will result in your access being terminated and future access denied.

The use of the Internet is a privilege, not a right, and inappropriate use will result in cancellation of those privileges. Users must follow all library rules. Library staff will have complete and final say over what is deemed appropriate. Library staff may deny access to the computers at any time.

 1. Users must not:

2. Users may book sessions in “one hour” increments. Library staff may ask you to end your session if you have been on the computer longer than one hour. If you have violated this policy, cause any discomfort for other users, or are causing a disturbance you may be asked to leave immediately.

3. Users may book sessions two days in advance. Booking may be made in person or by telephone. A booking must be used before a second booking may be made. Users who are fifteen minutes late for a booking will lose that booking if someone else requires that computer. Repeated lateness or non-appearance for bookings may result in bookings not being accepted in the future. In the event that the equipment is not booked users may be allowed access on first come first served basis for up to one hour.

4. Users requiring printouts will be charged at the rate of .30 cents a page. Colour printouts are $1.50 per copy.

5. Users may use word processing software or desktop publishing software, but may not access any other programs or system utilities.

6. A basic level of knowledge is required of users. If you require training, Library staff can inform you of training sessions available. Library staff may offer you some assistance but do not provide computer training.

7. Users may open a web-based e-mail account, such as Hotmail, and use it from Librarycomputers. Users may not use the Library e-mail account.

8. A responsible adult must accompany children ten years of age and under when using Library computers.

9. Children 11-14 years of age must have a parent or an adult legally responsible for them sign the Internet agreement policy on their behalf. The parent or guardian is then legally responsible for the activities of the child on the library computers.

10. Use is limited to a maximum of two people per station.

11. Users are liable for any damage to the equipment or software.

12. Access is available during Library hours except for the first thirty minutes and the last thirty minutes of each day.

13. Vandalism to hardware, software, Library property or any Internet connection will result in the loss of access.

14. I have read and understand this policy. I agree to abide by the terms of this agreement and adhere to the rules posted at the computers. I understand that charges may be levied or privileges withdrawn if the rules are not followed.
