"wah chei yay!"- Cree
welcome.
Moosonee is a community of
approximately 2500 on the West side
of the Moose River and just a short boat ride to the James Bay. The
Ontario Northland Railway, winds it's way through the wilderness as
the main provider of passenger services and freight express.
The end of the road is Moosonee.
Museums, tours, and friendly faces greet the hardened visitor who has
just traveled 4 short hours North from Cochrane on our Polar Bear
Express. Birder's will be amazed at our many and varied species (over
250 species have been recorded!), backpackers and campers will find
plenty of camping on Charles Island a short water taxi ride across the
Moose River. History buffs will marvel at the stories our elders can tell
you of this area. Naturalists will enjoy searching for the native marigolds,
violets, wood lily, yellow lady-slipper,and of course the trillium, our
provincial flower. For those looking for something a little harder
and mineral, fossils over 300 million years old are abundant on our
shores, brachiopods, crinoids and their like are easily available. If
you are
looking for folks walking around in animal suits, or circus rides to make
your head spin then this is not the place to come; If you want to see
an
honest to goodness far North community, landscapes unlike any other
place in Canada then come ride the rails to...Moosonee.
