The story of education in the mining town of Elliot Lake is mingled with overtones of desperation and hope. Education for high school students started out in the Alcan Theatre, a rude mining recreational hall with little in the way of equipment or qualified staff. Elementary students were scheduled into a three-room school on Spruce Avenue, with three temporary shacks to accommodate the overflow. Even then, school operated on a shift system with huge classes, insufficient desks, and for many, long bumpy bus rides over atrocious roads.
When high school classes began in a new brick school, several additions were necessary over the years. The story of the development of the school reflects the history of the town as it waned and thrived on the production of uranium.
